After the Interview

So, you have made it to the last stretch of the interview. The hard part is over, and you nailed everything that was thrown at you so with grace, expertise, and skill.

Now, it’s time to say goodbye — for now!

Your interviewer might finish up with something like, ‘well, that’s all we have for today — do you have any questions for us?’. This is one of your last chances to wow the interview panel with your insight and skill while also putting to bed any concerns they might have about your ability to do the job well. If you aren't sure what to ask just yet — this article dives deeper into preparing for an interview.

When your questions are answered, and the interview is officially over — we encourage you to take the time to go through the same three steps you did when you arrived (these were talked about here). This means it’s time to:

  1. Make eye contact with everybody in the room
  2. Shake hands (COVID dependent)
  3. Smile

While you are doing this, make sure to thank everybody for allowing you the opportunity to meet with them and have the interview.

And with that, the hard part is officially over. Now it’s time to sit back, relax, and wait for that ring tone. While you are doing this, there are a few things to remember and do that can help boost your chances.

Be available

From the moment you step out of the interview room, ensure you are available via all channels of communication that you have provided. Someone from the interview may have a follow-up question, or even ask for an example of some work — you want to be prompt with answering this.

Some common advice is to write an email, and at Clothier Careers we think this can be a great idea — when it’s done right.

At this time, the recruiter will already be making a decision based on what they have seen, so reiterating all your strengths may come across wrong. Instead, an appropriately worded email that shows gratitude and professionalism is perfect — and it keeps your name on their radar for future roles.

An example:

Good afternoon,

I am writing to once again thank you and the selection panel for your time in interviewing me for the position of Administration Supervisor yesterday. Through our discussion, I learned more about your business and the day to day role and this only reiterated to me how much I would like an opportunity to serve the business within this role.

If you have any further questions regarding my application please do not hesitate to contact me at any time — I am available by phone or email.

Once again, I sincerely thank you for this opportunity.

Kind regards,

John Johnson

If you choose to write an email to your prospective employer — double check your spelling, grammar and syntax to ensure it’s right, and don’t forget to include all relevant parties in the email.
